An injection needle is also known as a hypodermic needle, a hollow needle that is paired with a syringe to be able to both inject and extract fluids into and from the body. Whether they are used to administer vaccines or needed medicine, or are required for a blood draw or extraction of fluid from a cyst, injection needles play a large part in providing quality medical care.

This size is one of the most commonly used, and purchasing an injection need that attached to the syringe with a Luer-Lok allows this to be twisted into a pre-filled syringe.

A 20-gauge injection needle has an .8192 millimeter outer diameter, and an inner diameter of .603 millimeters. As this is one of the larger gauge needle sizes, a 20 is often the smallest many practitioners will use when planning to give blood to an average adult. Pediatric and elderly patients may need a thinner, higher-gauged needle.  Due to the average size, a 20-gauge needle is an ideal option for thick fluids, as well. Each hospital system and individual may have a preference or protocol, though, and it’s wise to know that in advance.
